• One

He can eat and think at the same time if he takes care and is kept away from soup. Even if he uses a spoon.
Favourite artists: David Smith, Klee, Constable, Miró, Rauchenburg, all those anonymous Australian and Paleolithic rock painters, mid-17th century Dutch artists, and Gonroku Matsuda, who produced stunning laquerware.

  • Two

The antithesis of cool, as typified by the capped gentleman above, he is nevertheless believed to be dynamic, forward-thinking and a regular alpha male.
Believed, that is, by the same people who worship the Great White Sandwich and think that live ducks are the reincarnation of dead ducks.
Moriguchi Kako and Mae Fumio are also fine artisans.

  • Three

Likes Japanese gardens, Sibelius and Shostakovitch, and most things historical, excluding Greeks and Romans – they’re too tidy. Will watch Howl’s Moving Castle and Star Wars-y stuff. Otherwise, can’t see the point of most telly and would like to fine people heavily for watching soaps.
Board games are good, though, including the one he’s concocting with his son. It involves rocks. Likes penguins.

  • Four

Collects chess sets almost by accident. Favourites: a largish, finely-turned wood, copper-inlaid set from Poland, a brass one from Greece and a hand-carved set from China.
    He drew the duck…
